Chapter Nine

Police stopped everyone from leaving the yacht club. An ambulance arrived within five minutes, and emergency medical technicians were on the scene so fast Montana suspected Royce had had them on standby.

Nothing they did helped the guy who’d been poisoned. Apparently the toxin used was fast-acting and permanent. Montana’s fists clenched and he hovered near Kate, refusing to budge from her side. His team circled the throng, watching closely, ready to spring into action.

Royce conferred with the police and EMTs, but didn’t make contact with any of the others. They’d have time back at the SOS alternate site to put their heads together, review the videos and discover where their logic had gone wrong.

Montana couldn’t wait to get Kate out of the ballroom. He didn’t feel that she was any safer with a roomful of police. If anything, the chaos of adding more people to the mix only made him more anxious to get her to safety.

“Stop worrying. I wasn’t the one who was poisoned.” She pushed him to the side. “And you can quit blocking my view. You’re making me crazy.”

He’d pretty much backed her into a corner and stood in front of her. It was the only way he could be certain no one would get a shot at her while attention was on the guy who’d been poisoned.

“Now would be the time to make another attempt,” Montana said.

“Move.” She shoved him to the side and stared at the first responders, firefighters and police. “What the hell? What’s wrong with Royce?”

Montana’s gaze shot to the last place he’d seen Fontaine and Tazer, standing beside the man in charge of the scene.

Fontaine was leaning heavily on Tazer, his face pale.

Tazer shouted for help.

EMTs converged on Fontaine and eased him onto a gurney. The emergency crew went to work stabilizing the leader of the SOS.

Kate started forward.

Montana’s hand shot out, grabbing her arm. “We’re not supposed to know him.”

“But he’s our friend. He’s one of the team.”

“What can you do to help?” Montana reasoned.

“I don’t know. But I can’t just stand here.”

“What’s going on?” Duff’s voice sounded in Montana’s ear.

“Fontaine is down,” he responded. “Could be the same problem as the first victim.”

Duff cursed. “Give me bullets and mortars any day. Poisoning guests is pure evil.”

“Someone needs to go with Fontaine.”

“Sawyer’s on the outside of the building. He can go with Fontaine and Tazer to the hospital. In the meantime, you need to get Mrs. Brantley out.”

Montana glanced toward the main exit, swarmed by at least a dozen police officers. “Can’t get past the cops.”

“Head toward the kitchen. There’s a back exit they haven’t completely closed off yet. We can create a distraction while you slip out.”

Montana hooked Kate’s arm. “Time to go.”

“But what about Royce?” Kate dug in her heels and pulled against his grip on her arm. “What happened to no man left behind?”

“Tazer has his back. Sawyer is one of the security guards on the outside. He’ll go with them to the hospital. Royce isn’t being left behind.
